The timeline that matters
- Up to 60 days before your coverage ends: you can apply for a Marketplace plan.
- The day coverage ends: your new plan can start the next day if you enrolled in advance.
- Up to 60 days after: you can still enroll, but you may have a gap.
When does coverage on a parent's plan actually end?
Under the ACA, plans that cover dependents must offer coverage until age 26, whether you're married, living at home, in school, financially independent or not a tax dependent. When it ends depends on the plan:
- Many employer plans end coverage at the end of the month you turn 26.
- Many individual (Marketplace) plans keep you through December 31 of the year you turn 26.
- Some plans end on the birthday itself.
Ask your parent to check with their HR department or plan documents. Don't guess.
Your options at 26
1. Your own employer's plan
If your job offers coverage, turning 26 typically lets you enroll mid-year as a qualifying event. Compare the employee premium, deductible and network with your other options.
2. A Marketplace plan
Losing coverage at 26 opens a 60-day Special Enrollment Period. Depending on your income, you may qualify for a premium tax credit. If your employer's plan is considered affordable under ACA rules (no more than 9.96% of household income for employee-only coverage in 2026), you generally can't get the tax credit.
3. A catastrophic plan
If you're under 30, you can buy a catastrophic plan: a low premium and a very high deductible, with preventive care and a few primary care visits covered first. Premium tax credits can't be used toward them. Starting in 2026, catastrophic plans also qualify you to contribute to an HSA.
4. COBRA on your parent's plan
If your parent's employer plan is subject to COBRA, you can usually keep it for up to 36 months. You'll pay the full premium plus up to 2%, which is often the most expensive choice. It can make sense if you're mid-treatment and want to keep the same doctors and deductible.
5. Medicaid
If your income is low, check Medicaid. You can apply any time of year.
What does insurance cost at 26?
Premiums depend on your state, ZIP code, plan tier and tobacco use, and your price after a tax credit depends on your expected income for the year. Because premiums rise with age, 26 is one of the cheaper ages to buy your own plan. The quickest way to know your number is a quote with your real income estimate.
Three mistakes to avoid
- Waiting until coverage ends. Apply before so the new plan starts the next day.
- Picking the cheapest premium without checking your doctors and prescriptions.
- Guessing your income. If you underestimate, you may have to repay some of the tax credit at tax time. Since the enhanced subsidies expired after 2025, the repayment amount can be larger than it was.

Do you lose your parents' insurance on your 26th birthday?
Not always on the day. Many employer plans end at month-end; many individual plans run through December 31.

Yes. It opens a 60-day Special Enrollment Period, and you can apply up to 60 days early.
