Open Enrollment 2027: An 8-Step Checklist Before You Renew

Open Enrollment starts November 1. Your plan, price and tax credit may all be different next year. Here's what to check before you click "renew."

Key dates

1. Read your renewal notice, then don't trust it

Your carrier and the Marketplace will send renewal notices. The premium shown may be based on last year's income and subsidy. Your real 2027 price can be very different, especially now that the enhanced subsidies have expired.

2. Update your income estimate

Your tax credit depends on what you expect to earn in 2027. Got a raise, started a business, or expect less overtime? Update it. Underestimating can mean repaying credits at tax time, and repayment caps no longer apply for most households.

3. Check your doctors and hospital

Networks change every year. Search the carrier's 2027 directory by name and call the office to confirm they're taking your plan next year.

4. Check your prescriptions

Look up each medication on the plan's 2027 drug list. A drug that moves to a higher tier, or needs prior authorization, can cost far more.

5. Compare total cost, not just premium

Add up 12 months of premium plus your expected visits and prescriptions. Then add the out-of-pocket maximum to see your worst-case year.

6. Recheck Silver vs. Bronze

If your income qualifies for cost-sharing reductions, a Silver plan can come with a much lower deductible. If you're healthy and over the subsidy cliff, a Bronze plan with an HSA may be the better deal.

7. Report life changes

Marriage, divorce, a new baby, a move or a child turning 26 all affect who should be on the plan and what you qualify for.

8. Confirm and pay your first premium

Coverage isn't active until the first payment, called a binder payment, is made. Set up autopay so January claims don't get denied.

If you have employer coverage

Your employer's open enrollment usually runs on its own schedule, often in the fall. If the family premium is high, check whether your spouse or kids could qualify for a Marketplace tax credit under the family affordability rule.
